Une mère et sa fille représentée au premier plan sont en train de préparer un plat de Sashimi, du thon rouge cru découpé accompagné de radis râpé. Ce plat était très apprécié à l'époque d'Edo.

Kitagawa Utamaro était un peintre d'ukiyo-e (images du monde flottant) actif durant l'ère Kansei (1789-1801), considérée comme l'âge d'or de cet art. Il peignit de nombreux portraits de jolies femmes, de celles des rues aux courtisanes de Yoshiwara. extrait du site du musée national
