Summary[edit]

Description
English: Devil's Dyke: Toposcopes & telescope The telescope is of the talking variety, the three smaller concrete bases hold different toposcopes, and the large concrete structure is a double sided bench. The inscription in the circular section at the top of the bench tells us that 'His Royal Highness The Duke of York dedicated the Dyke Estate to the use of the public for ever on the 30 May 1928'. In this case the Duke of York later became King George VI, and this photo was coincidentally taken almost exactly 80 years to the day after the dedication. Up until 1928 the 190 acre Devil's Dyke Estate had been privately owned and various schemes for developing it had been put forward including a hilltop village with hundreds of bungalows, and a motor racing circuit. But in 1928 the estate was purchased by Brighton Town Council, in order to prevent any unsuitable development, for the sum of £9,000.
