Summary[edit]
DescriptionDisused dock on Rainham Creek - geograph.org.uk - 187529.jpg |
English: Disused dock on Rainham Creek. There is evidence of buildings along this bit of shore and around the Berengrave nature reserve but I've no idea what sort of industry existed here. There are also several granite tank traps(?) (one pictured bottom right) which is extraordinary since there is no granite in these parts. Kingsnorth Power Station can be seen across the Medway.
My thanks to Harry Keane for the following extra information: "The area you refer to has been "reworked" by (I think) Groundwork Medway/Swale, with the aid of Lottery funding, as part of a larger Millennium project. It was once in use as a working dock for vessels taking lime or chalk from one of the many chalk pits in the area. The project was undertaken to make the area safe for "informal recreation" (that's walking about, to you and me) and to eliminate the risk of stupid people falling in the water from the dockside. The granite "tank trap" is an obvious import and is part of measures designed to stop stolen cars being driven on to the sea wall and set on fire or driven into the river. The old, unimproved, site had a quaint industrial charm all of its own and I'm not sure that the sanitised cleaned-up version is any better!" |
