Description

Die Orangerie in Kassel wurde unterhalb bzw. rund 400 m südlich des ehemaligen Stadtschlosses nahe dem westlichen Fuldaufer unter Landgraf Karl zwischen 1703 und 1711 erbaut. Seitdem bildet es den nördlichen Anfang der Karlsaue.

Heutige Nutzung

Heute ist die Orangerie Sitz des Astronomisch-Physikalischen Kabinetts mit darin integriertem Planetarium. Dem Museum ist seit 1996 der „Planetenwanderweg Karlsaue“ angegliedert.

Die Verwaltung der Museumslandschaft Hessen-Kassel strebt die Wiederaufnahme der Orangeriekultur in Kassel an. Zu diesem Zweck sollen in Zukunft wiederum Zitruspflanzen zumindest in Teilen der Orangerie überwintert und die Räumlichkeiten im Sommer für Veranstaltungen genutzt werden.

Während der documenta 12 wird die Wiese vor der Orangerie für die Ausstellung genutzt, hierzu wurde eine 9500 m² große Halle auf der Wiese errichtet und dazu die Wiese zu großen Teilen asphaltiert. Diese Halle wird Auepavillon genannt.
