Sigismund Altar in Freising Cathedral, southern gallery

Summary[edit]

Description
Deutsch: Der hl.

Papst Alexander I., 5.
English: St. Sigismund, King of Burgundy (516-523) and martyr † 524 is the third patron saint of Freising Cathedral, along with Mary and Corbinian. He was king of Burgundy from 516-523 and has been the patron saint of the diocese since 1359.

Emperor Charles IV had some of his relics brought from the Valais monastery of Saint Maurice to Prague in 1354. During this time, Freising Cathedral also received part of the relics.

His altar is located in the southern gallery. To his right was added St. Lantpert (around 1710) and to the right St. Pope Alexander I, 5th Pope of Rome † 115. Both are also neighbours in the ceiling painting of Freising Cathedral with the homage to Korbinian.
