Description

NPS/Patrick Myers The beautiful rising angles of the dunes and Sangre de Cristo Mountains are more than coincidence - they are the result of plate tectonics that have dropped the valley floor and lifted this steep, knife-ridged range over 14,000 feet (4,267m) in elevation. This resulted in a vast basin where sand accumulates and massive dunes form at the base of the mountains. The Great Sand Dunes landscape is uplifting in more ways than one!
