Dungeness Plantation is owned and managed by Cumberland Island National Seashore in Georgia. It is a site in the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. In the early 19th century, over 225 people were enslaved on Cumberland Island, many of whom were tied to the Dungeness Plantation. In 1815, British troops arrived on the island and established their headquarters at Dungeness Plantation and enforced an 1814 proclamation. This proclamation gave freedom seekers the choice to enlist in the British armed forces, or to be sent as free settlers to British occupied North America or the West Indies. Because of this, hundreds of freedom seekers travelled to the British Headquarters on Cumberland Island.
