English: There are two families of electoral systems.
Winner-Take-All includes systems like FPTP (First Past The Post) and AV (Alternate Vote) aka "Ranked Ballot" "Preferential Ballot" "IRV" or "Instant Runoff Voting" in Single Member Ridings In these systems as little as 39% of the votes can give a single political party 100% of the power in a majority government. Which means 61% of the votes don't count. OR Proportional Representation can be achieved in many different ways. Two of those recommended for Canada include MMP (Mixed Member Proportional) and STV or Single Transferable Vote (which can also be called "Ranked Ballot" "Proportional Ballot" or "Preferential Ballot" when used in Multi-Member Ridings In a Proportional System, 39% of the votes deliver 39% of the power. In simple terms that means EVERY VOTE COUNTS. |
