Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Seen on Main Street in North Tonawanda, New York is the annex to the First United Methodist Church, namely its Education Building. Completed in 1963 to a design by the Buffalo based architectural practice of Shelgren, Whitman, Patterson & Marzec, this single-story brick structure is appended to the north side of the main church building which has stood since 1882 at the corner of Main and Tremont Streets in the center of downtown. With its flat roof, simple rectilinear forms, large windows, and lack of much exterior ornamentation, it's a textbook example of the Modernist style that then ruled the day in the architecture world, and contains not only six Sunday school classrooms but also a 300-capacity fellowship hall, full kitchen, pastor's study, and administrative offices. Construction of the $172,000 addition to the wood-framed Gothic-style sanctuary proceeded very quickly after the March 1963 groundbreaking: a cornerstone-laying ceremony was held in May of the same year, and dedication followed in October.
