Summary[edit]

Description
English: Base-catalyzed aldol dehydration mechanism. A dimeric aldol dehydration is shown. A molecule of base, in this case methoxide anion, substracts an hydroxyl group and carbonyl group common α-hydrogen atom from the aldol (1). The formed anion (2), stabilized by resonance, loses an hydroxide anion, leading to the α,β-unsaturated ketone (3).
