Deutsch: Zwillinge galten und gelten in Teilen Westafrikas als besonderes Glück für die Familie. Ihre hohe Sterblichkeit führte zu einer besonderen Form der Trauerbewältigung. Die Beziehung zu einem verstorbenen Zwillingskind oder Zwillingskindern wurde auch nach ihrem Tod durch symbolische Fütterungen und Waschungen solcher Figuren aufrechterhalten. Die kleinen dekorativen Figuren waren seit dem 19. Jahrhundert ein beliebtes Sammlerstück, wurden in großer Zahl gehandelt und auch für den Markt hergestellt. Die Seele des Zwillings war nicht an eine spezifische geschnitzte Figur gebunden, sondern konnte auch in einer neuen, von einem rituellen Spezialisten angefertigten Skulptur lokalisiert werden.
English: In parts of West Africa, twins were and still are considered particularly lucky for the family. Their high mortality led to a special form of mourning. The relationship with a deceased twin or twin children was maintained even after their death through symbolic feedings and ablutions of such figures. The small decorative figurines were a popular collector's item since the 19th century. They were traded in large numbers and also manufactured for the market. The soul of the twin was not bound to a specific carved figure, but could also be located in a new sculpture made by a ritual specialist. |

The estate of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, owned by the Karl and Emy Schmidt-Rottluff Foundation at the Brücke Museum, contains his collection of around 100 sculptures and objects with colonial backgrounds. The Brücke artist himself never travelled outside Europe and, to the best of current knowledge, bought these objects in the art trade and from private owners from the 1910s onwards. The collection includes ritual and everyday objects, alongside souvenirs for the Western market. The way they were perceived underwent changes: they came to be seen as objects of art and decoration. Little is known of their origins, the circumstances of their acquisition, or the historical and current importance of the objects. Most of them originate from Germany’s former colonies, thus referring directly to German Expressionists’ entanglements in the often unlawful appropriation of material culture in colonially occupied lands.
