Santa Maria de Sants fou un municipi independent del pla de Barcelona que incloia els actuals barris de Sants, Sants-Badal, la Bordeta, la Marina de Port i la Marina del Prat Vermell. Aquests dos últims anomenats la Marina de Sants, o la Marina i que tenia com a nucli principal el barri del Port. El nom prové del de l'església de Santa Maria de Sants, que potser és anterior al segle V, però que està ja perfectament datada des de l'any 780. L'edifici actual substitueix a un d'anterior profanat durant la Guerra Civil Espanyola. Es començà a bastir l'any 1940 i fou consagrat l'any 1965.
