Description

Esvres ou Esvres-sur-Indre (Indre-et-Loire)

Le Pont Girault dit aussi Pont Romain.

Le pont relie les communes de Saint-Branchs et d'Esvres.

Ce pont médiéval (XIIIe, XVe), et non romain, enjambe l'Echandon, affluent de l'Indre.


Les ponts romains étaient souvent constitués d'une série d'arches en plein-cintre*. Les voûtes reposent sur des piles épaisses (largeur d'environ la moitié de la voûte).. Le même cintre* était réutilisé pour chaque arche.

Les ponts du Moyen-Age sont caractérisés par des voûtes en arc brisé ou ogive. Cette technique permet de réduire la taille des piles mais présente l’inconvénient d’accentuer le dos d’âne du pont.


  • Plein-cintre : en demi-cercle.
  • Le cintre est une charpente provisoire qui permet de construire la voûte. Il a la forme de la voûte.
