Summary[edit]

Description

In his Footprint East Africa Handbook, 7th Edition, Michael Hodd identifies the building housing these paintings as an "Iqa-bet, a two-story stone storage building, which contains religious artifacts." The building is next to the Church of Abba Afse, Yeha, Tigray Region, northern Ethiopia.

Center: St. George slaying the dragon. St. George is Ethiopia's patron saint.

Left: Virgin Mary and Jesus.

I do not have information about the dates or provenance of these pieces. However, to put it tactfully, they are simpler, stiffer and less expressive than their counterparts in the Laka Tana area, Gondar and Axum.

So, I will go out on a limb and suggest the paintings shown above are more recent than others I saw in Ethiopia.

To see the contrast between different versions of the same subject, take a look below, where you will find an 18th century painting of St. George and the dragon from Church of Narga Selassie, Dek Island, Lake Tana, Ethiopia.
