Description

Le 31 mars 1961, Camille Blanc, Maire d’Evian, était assassiné par les commandos de l’OAS pour la simple raison que sa ville devait abriter les négociations en vue d’un accord de paix en Algérie.

La proximité de Genève et la neutralité suisse permettaient aux délégués algériens une certaine sécurité pour leur participation aux pourparlers.

"(…)Réveillé à 2h. 35 par l'explosion d'une première charge de plastic déposée sous son automobile, le maire, monsieur Camille Blanc, 49 ans, se précipitait au téléphone et était tué quelques seconds après par l'explosion d'une deuxième charge qui avait été posée sur la fenêtre du salon de l'Hôtel Beau-Rivage, dont il était propriétaire. (…) ". (AFP 31 mars 1961)

Camille Blanc avait été élu pour la première fois maire d'Evian en 1945. Il sera réélu en 1947, 1953 et 1959.

Les accords d'Evian seront signés le 18 mars 1962 entre la France et le Front de Libération Nationale (FLN) d'Algérie. Ils mettent fin à 8 ans de guerre.

The proximity of Geneva and the Swiss neutrality allowed the Algerian delegate some security for their participation in the talks.

Woke up at 2am. 35 by the explosion of a first load of plastic lodged in his car, the Mayor, Mr. Camille White, 49, rushed to the phone and was killed a few seconds after the explosion a second charge was placed on the living room window of the Hotel Beau-Rivage, which he owned. Camille Blanc was elected first mayor of Evian in 1945. He was reelected in 1947, 1953 and 1959.

The Evian agreements will be signed March 18, 1962 between France and the National Liberation Front (FLN) in Algeria. They put an end to eight years of war.
