Dans la zone de transition se développe la turbulence.
À un certain Reynolds longitudinal (à peu près constant à turbulence de soufflerie donnée) des ondes de turbulence apparaissent.
Noter que le profil de vitesse de la couche limite linéaire est presque linéaire à sa base.
Le profil de vitesses de la couche limite turbulente est beaucoup plus "plein" que celui de la couche limite laminaire : cela lui permet de mieux résister à l’immixtion d'un gradient adverse de pression (en provenance du culot d'un corps, par exemple).
Ici est la vitesse régnant "au sommet" de la couche limite et, dans ce cas d'un écoulement sur une plaque plane sans gradient de pression, partout en dehors de la couche limite.
Ce schéma représente l'écoulement stationnaire d'un fluide incompressible sur une plaque. Seule la couche limite qui se forme sur la face supérieure a été dessinée. En dehors de la couche limite, dans cet écoulement sans "gradient de pression", la vitesse est uniforme et égale à .
