Description
This painting illustrates Fabritius' use of a restricted colour palette and delicate lighting effects against a light background. Note the trompe l'oeil effect: from a distance and against a wall of the right colour, the box on which the goldfinch is perching seems truly three-dimensional and the bird is strikingly life-like.
