Description
English: The Market place where Thomas Muentzer's adversary Martin Luther preached against him during the Peasants' War of 1525. All around are Fachwerkhäuser, timber framed houses with decorative motifs carved on the beams. On 2 May 1525, a throng of Peasants entered Stolberg to put their 24 demands to the local Duke, Graf Botho of Stolberg.

The bronze monument dates from the previous year, 1989, to commemorate the 500th birth anniversary of Thomas Müntzer (1489) . The DDR also issued commemorative stamps that year. The monument is by Klaus Messerschmidt of Halle. The birthplace of Muentzer burnt down in 1851 and the uprights symbolise the corners of his house carved with religious symbolism from which he seems to be escaping . The monument was the last bronze of DDR times, and suffered from brown coal burning pollution (Sulphur Dioxide) almost immediately. A much better shot is found here by @wolf-rab of the ensemble.
