Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Farmland at Markwell Markwell is a hamlet of a couple of farms and a few houses over looking the River Tiddy. It sits on a promontory of land that lies between the River Tiddy and the River Lynher, both tidal at this point and once a centre of a thriving quarrying industry. Both rivers are lined with old quarries, the oldest originating from the 18th century, and disused quays once used to load the volcanic granite onto the river barges bound for building sites in nearby Plymouth and Devonport. On the return journey the barges carried limestone from the Cattedown and Plymstock Quarries and there are the remains of old lime kilns near the quays. Another profitable return cargo for the bargees was ‘Devonport Dung’, the sweepings from the streets of Devonport where horse manure provided a worthwhile fertiliser. The St German's viaduct in the centre distance is in SX3657.
