Summary[edit]

Description

The panel with the bust of a bearded man with curly hair comes from the Egyptian oasis of Fayum and is a good example of a portrait made in wax painting on wood with clearly individual features. The painter has worked out the different structure of the short, wiry whiskers and the soft curls that play around the face. The skin, parts of the hair and the beard were reworked with a modelling stick. The warm, rather dark colouring underlines the friendly, distant expression of the bearded man, whose appearance is clearly reminiscent of portraits of the emperor Marc Aurelius.
