Description

Photomicrographs of feline hair. Characteristic features are the "ladder-like" appearance of the medullla and the crenated or spinous appearance of the cuticle. In the lower right image the arrows point to overlapping scales visible on the surface of the cuticle. The medullary index (diameter of the medulla relative to the diameter of the hair shaft) is generally greater than 1/3 in animals and less than 1/3 in humans. Spinous type cuticle scales are not found in humans. In the lower right image the arrows point to overlapping scales on the surface of the cuticle, another characteristic feature. Animal hairs may contaminate open or ulcerated skin lesions in humans. Thus, it is important to be familiar with their appearance.
