Snapshot of the production process of fungal-plant composite material for the 'MY-CO SPACE' project. Picture by Wolfgang Günzel.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Snapshot of the production process of fungal-plant composite material for the MY-CO SPACE roofing: Hemp shives are inoculated with mycelium of the tinder fungus Fomes fomentarius and cultivated in hexagonally shaped frames made of plywood. Over a period of about 4 weeks, the fungus transforms plant biomass into its own biomass. Its continuously growing mycelium connects the loose substrate particles to form a fungus-plant composite. After only 2 weeks, the whitish mycelium begins to cover the surface of the fungal panels and can be observed with the naked eye. The cultivation is terminated and the fungus inactivated by drying the fungal panels in the oven at 60°C for two days.
