Description

Doctors on call in the Swansea area throughout the Christmas holidays had a special visitor this week when First Minister Rhodri Morgan called in to the Swansea Out of Hours GP Service.

The First Minister met GPs and their support staff running the new service at their base at Singleton Hospital. The GPs formed a co-operative and won the contract from Swansea Local Health Board a few months ago. The co-op, known as Swansea SOS, provides the service to patients in the evenings, at weekends and during the Christmas and New Year holidays when GP surgeries and health centres are closed.

The Swansea Out of Hours service went live at the end of September 2004. It works in partnership with NHS Direct who also handle calls via a dedicated all-Wales telephone number while the Swansea Out of Hours Service provides clinical contact services, face to face contact and a home visiting service. It is expected that the service will deal with around 60,000 contacts a year with around 30% of calls dealt with by telephone – either by directing patients to other more appropriate services or advising patients on self care. There are 60 GPs working for the Swansea Out of Hours Service the majority of whom are local GPs.

The First Minister said : "It was a privilege to meet the very dedicated and expert team of doctors and other staff who are providing a first class care to patients in the Swansea area in the evenings and at weekends as well as over the busy Christmas period. The Swansea Out of Hours service has already proved to be a success and we are delighted with how well it has been operating since its launch three months ago."
