Title
English: First Vashon School built on permanent ground in King County, ca. 1893
Description
English:

Vashon Island's earliest school buildings were rough shacks or cabins. Its first permanent school building opened in October 1887 with twenty-six students and one teacher. King County provided the money, and island residents built the board and batten structure on donated land north of the town of Vashon. The building measured 18 x 28 feet. The window frames were painted, and the roof was neatly covered with milled cedar shingles. This photo shows the students and teachers standing outside Vashon Island's first permanent schoolhouse. Most of the girls wear pinafores to keep their dresses clean. The photo was taken sometime between 1887 and 1900.

Original photograph: between 1887 and 1900. Copied after 1975 by the Museum of History and Industry.
