Flag of the Comoros — unofficial construction sheet

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Flag of the Comoros — unofficial construction sheet.
In the absence of definitive government specifications, this construction sheet serves to document Wikimedia's representation of the flag of the Comoros as it appears in the December 25, 2021 version of File:Flag of the Comoros.svg.

Own work. Article 9 of the Comoros Constitution contains a very short description of the flag but it fails to provide the complete geometry.

The national flag is composed of four horizontal bands of equal width, superimposed, arranged in the lengthwise, yellow, white, red and blue in color, starting from the top to the bottom. A green isosceles triangle is placed on the side of the pole. A white crescent figures, with four white stars aligned from one end to the other of the crescent.

—  Article 9 of the Constitution

There is no evidence that the government has ever provided a full geometric specification for the flag. Therefore, this construction sheet is mostly constructed from non-official sources.

This construction sheet borrows two primary assumptions from Vexilla Mundi and Flags of the World (FOTW):

  • The flag ratio is 3:5.
  • The right apex of the triangle sits on the flag's vertical centerline. The resulting angle of the right apex is about 61.9°; it is close enough to 60° that to the naked eye, the triangle may appear to be equilateral. There is no reason to believe it should be converted to a perfect equilateral triangle because the constitution (as quoted above) only describes it as being isosceles.

Other miscellaneous assumptions made on this construction sheet include:

  • One point on each star points to the top of the flag. This assumption conflicts with Vexilla Mundi's construction sheet which shows the stars rotated 90° clockwise.
  • The stars are regular pentagrams.
  • The stars are equally spaced.
  • The imaginary line that connects the tips of crescent passes through the exact geometric centres (centroids) of all four stars; this seems to be a reasonable (and possibly pedantic) interpretation of the wording in the constitution.

The size and shape of the crescent, as well as the size and spacing of the stars are very loosely based on a mix of measurements and/or visual inspections of the following images:

Note: the government provides a drawing (PNG image) of the flag at Government of Comoros - Symbols of State. The drawing depicts an unexplained 5:9 aspect ratio, an equilateral triangle, and inflated stars that do not appear to match anything seen in the real world. The drawing bears no text or dimensions and it is accompanied with absolutely no documentation. There is no compelling reason to believe that the drawing should be treated as an official representation of the flag and that is why it is not listed in the sources above. If the government wanted to officially adopt inflated stars, it should have published inner and outer radii for them.
