Summary[edit]
DescriptionFlamburiari arms.svg | Arms of the Flamburiari family of Corfu, Ionian Islands. The Flamburiari family's townhouse (mansion) in Corfu Town is now the Cavalieri Hotel. Their country seat in Corfu was San Stefano, near Benitses, built in 1782 by Anneti-Justiniani-Kazamayor, a member of the great Venetian family of w:Giustiniani (Corfu: The Garden Isle, p.69). San Stefano passed to the Manessis family as the dowry of Lily Flamburiari on her marriage to Petros Manessis. Their grandson is the present owner in 2023. In 1994 the owner was Stephen Manessis. Amongst the notable visitors have been Kaiser Wilhelm II and Elizabeth of Austria; Queen Alexandra; the British High Commissioner Sir Frederick Adam who stayed in the house in about 1850 while supervising the construction of the waterworks which supplied Corfu Town with mains water. (Source: https://www.sanstefanoestate.com/). Count Spiro Flamburiari (living in 1994), born in Corfu, left Corfu "as a young boy". He became a naturalised British Subject and married Mildred-Mary (Countess Flamburiari) (born 1945), an artist and a niece of 2nd Baron Beaverbrook, and worked as a developer of tourism and leisure in Corfu, Greece and the USA. He is chairman of the Corfu Heritage Foundation, which he founded in 2000. In 1994 he owned a holiday villa “La Serenissima” "by the sea" on Corfu, and in 2013 was described as "Lord Rothschild’s grand neighbour in Corfu" (Evening Standard, 21 January 2013[1]). (Corfu: The Garden Isle, pp.9,13) He inspired the book: Giles, Frank (ed.), Corfu: The Garden Isle, Presented by Spiro Flamburiari, John Murray, London, 1994. |
