NEW YORK (Sept. 10, 2011) Command Master Chief Rafael Perez, command master chief of the amphibious transport dock ship USS New York (LPD 21), finds the name of Steven Mercado, a childhood friend, while visiting the National September 11 Memorial. Mercado was killed during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks while working as a first responder with Engine Company 40 of the New York Fire Department.
