Earth Day Hayarkon River Clean-Up Event,(April 28) Sixteen tenth-grade students from mainly Russian speaking immigrant families, attending Shevah Mofet, a Tel Aviv high school, participated in a Hayarkon River Clean-up Day dedicated to Earth Day 2011. These high school students are all participants in a U.S. government sponsored competition entitled Global Impact Apprentice (GIA): 2010 Environmental Challenge, organized by a U. S. based NGO called Empower Peace. They wore appropriate “ H2O and You” T-shirts, specially for the occasion, that they received from Royalton High School, Vermont., their partners in the competition. The students took water samples to test in their school laboratory and compare with clean water. Some of the students also took the opportunity to petition the public to create awareness of the environment and to agree to help stop pollution and help preserve the local wildlife by the river. The participants were all presented with copies of the IIP Earth day 2011 posters as souvenirs for their hard day’s work. The Hayarkon River is 27.5 km from its source at Rosh Ha’ayin springs to its estuary in the Mediterranean Sea. The river is the largest among the shore rivers of Israel. It flows through the municipal areas of Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, Bnei Brak, Petach Tikva, Ramat Hasharon, Hod Hasharon and the regional council of Drom Hasharon, and has been heavily polluted since the 1980’s by sewage water and large amount of waste. Swimming in the water of the Yarkon River is absolutely forbidden according to the Israeli Ministry of Health! |
