Summary[edit]

Description

This is myself on top of the largest pyramid in the world, La Danta in the Mayan site of El Mirador. Five of us each paid $700 US each to get here by helicopter and we were told that we were among the first 1000 people ever to go there.

I know these are not great shots but I thought I would share them with you.

El Mirador is a large pre-Columbian site of the Maya civilization in Guatemala. It flourished from about the 10th century BC, reaching its height from the 3rd century BC to the 2nd century AD was finally abandoned about the end of the 9th century. The site covers some 10 square miles.

The most notable structures are one is nicknamed "El Tigre", with its pyramid 180 feet high and another is called "La Danta", some 230 feet high, making it the tallest Maya structure, and one of the largest in the world, including the large platform the pyramid is set upon, an artificially built base covering some 18,000 square meters of ground, and a volume of 2,800,000 cubic meters, the largest in the world.

Although containing striking examples of Pre-Classic Maya civilization, the remote location of El Mirador has prevented it from becoming a popular tourist site.
