| Description |
Paying my respects at the 9/11 Memorial, which was dedicated in September 2011 on the tenth anniversary of the tragic events. Barbara Olson was the wife of Ted Olson, the Solicitor General under President George W. Bush. She was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 77, flying from Dulles Airport near Washington, DC to Los Angeles; the flight was hijacked, then crashed into the Pentagon. The Bush Administration, in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks, launched a sweeping War on Terrorism, which culminated in the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq. Many criticisms were raised, as Iraq was not involved in the 9/11 attacks, and also because of sweeping new changes taking effect domestically, such as the USA Patriot Act and the creation of Department of Homeland Security. Solicitor General Olson guided the Bush Administration through these changes as the government's chief legal mind. Additionally, evangelical Christians, such as Rev. Jerry Falwell, blamed a permissive, liberal American society, and its tolerance of abortions and homosexuality, as the reason for drawing God's wrath via 9/11. Mercifully, Ted Olson did not fall into that trap; in fact, when Christian terrorists passed Proposition 8 in California, he went to work with his liberal adversary, David Boies, to jointly fight to prove Proposition 8 unconstitutional and restore marriage equality to California. |
