Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This small building at 512 Second Avenue, wedged between the Smith Tower and Collins Building, was constructed in 1898 (King County Assessor gives an obviously incorrect date of 1920 as the building appears on earlier Sanborn & Baist maps) by Seattle hospitality magnates Hamm & Schmitz. The ground floor was initially occupied by the Sherman, Clay & Co. piano store and J.F. Adams grocery and later restaurants and a saloon connected to a bowling alley on the second floor. At the time of this tax photo taken in the late 1930s it was occupied by the Florence Theatre, which had opened in 1921 offering a mixture of stage shows and silent films and was later known as the Pioneer Square Theatre. Now occupied by office space and a restaurant, the building still stands today, sans cornice.
