| Description |
English: Footpath at Lower Hartshay At first sight, looking at the map, there is no obvious reason why this footpath should have a metalled surface - it apparently just provides a rural link to the village of Pentrich to the north. However, it all stems from the construction of the nearby A38 from Derby through to Mansfield.
The road through Lower Hartshay was the A610 trunk road from Nottingham through to the A6 at Ambergate, but the alignment of this was cut when the new junction between the two roads was constructed a little further north which was the only suitable location for the grade-separated junction required. Unsurprisingly, the A610 carried bus services, from Ripley to Crich and Belper, and these could no longer run through the village. Bus stops were therefore installed where two existing footpaths crossed the new A610 alignment, and the footpaths were provided with a hard surface for the general convenience of users. |
