Summary[edit]

Description
English: It is vacant now, there on Red Bluff Road, at Thomas Avenue. I seem to vaguely remember that it was a convenience store or produce market when it was first built, down the street from my elementary school and the house where I grew up.

For a time in the 1970s, though, it was a Knights of the Ku Klux Klan bookstore.

We've come a long way, America has, even in the last 40 years, certainly the last 150 years.

Now if we can just take advantage of the Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War to shed the old baggage.

It's time to shed the lie that the Civil War, secession, was not about slavery. It's time to shed the lie that the real heritage of the old south, the antebellum south, was not the Klan, lynching, racism, segregation, Jim Crow...

The sesquicentennial is an opportunity for the south to stop glorifying a past that relied on an evil institution. The sesquicentennial is an opportunity for those few soutnerners who still fly it to stop waving a flag that symbolizes a sad history and an evil cause.
