| Description |
English: As seen in August 2020. Like its neighbor to the west, the former H.S. Smith grocery store/current Share restaurant at the corner of East Spring Street, 5596 Main Street was built shortly after 1893 by Alexander Gotwalt and Henry Metz on what was previously the site of the Benjamin Miller estate, is a fine example of the vernacular commercial architecture of its era, and was named a Local Landmark of the Village of Williamsville on that basis in 2014. Originally a meat market owned by village residents George Steinbrenner (1863-1922; no apparent relation to the former New York Yankees owner) and Joseph Abel (1861-after 1930), the building is more famous for having housed Barney Miller's (1892-1961) auto parts and hardware store from 1918 through the 1970s (he was the son of the original land owner), as well as the Williamsville location of Ten Thousand Villages, a Mennonite-run, volunteer-staffed, not-for-profit chain of clothing and gift boutiques that operated here from 1983 until its move to Buffalo's Elmwood Village in 2017. |
