Fort Jesus is a fort located on Mombasa Island built between 1593 and 1596 by order of King Philip I of Portugal.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Fort Jesus was built to protect the old port of Mombasa. The Portuguese built the fort to protect them from enemy attacks. It was a military base from where expeditions were sent against coastal states and was used as a watch tower to see enemies as they approached from the Indian Ocean. It is recognized as a testament to the first successful attempt by a Western Power to establish influence over the Indian Ocean Trade. This was designed by Italian Giovanni Batista Cairati and is an example of Renaissance architecture.
