An unbalanced free body diagram with net force equation.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: A stick person pushes a rectangular fridge across the floor. To determine the acceleration of the fridge, we employ a free body diagram and use net force equations.

In the y-direction, our forces are balanced and so the acceleration is zero. Through the weight equation we can determine the magnitude of the normal force. Using the magnitude of the normal force and the coefficient of friction between the fridge and the floor, we can calculate the force of friction between the fridge and the floor.

Knowing the magnitude of the applied force, we can use the second law equation and mass of the fridge, we can calculate the acceleration of the fridge.
