English: French Convalescent Home Although facing Marine Parade it is in De Courcel Road a small street running parallel with the main A259. Built in 1898 to take in patients from the French Hospital in London it was run for years as a home for French and other foreign nationals until 1986 when it became registered as a nursing home until the trustees sold the site for development in 1999, Its demolition was averted by being given grade II listing and it was subsequently sold on and developed into luxury apartments. It is designed to look like a French chateau and initially only had one tower, the eastern one, before the other was added in 1904. |
