Summary[edit]
DescriptionFrost (mid-morning, 4 March 2018) (Newark, Ohio, USA) 2.jpg |
English: Frost in Newark, Ohio, USA. (4 March 2018)
Ice is an oxide mineral - H2O. It has a nonmetallic, glassy luster, is usually clear to white (the latter is due to the presence of microscopic air bubbles), has a white streak, forms hexagonal crystals, and has a low melting temperature. Natural ice can be found atop many lakes and ponds and rivers and streams in wintertime. It also forms sediment grains in the form of snow. Ice is the principal mineral in firn (= compacted snow, a sedimentary rock), glacial ice (= a metamorphic rock that is compacted & recrystallized firn), and icicles (= vertically-oriented, downward-tapering structures formed by dripping water as conditions fluctuate above and below the freezing temperature of water). The crystalline ice structures seen here are frost on a vehicle, making them semi-natural (the substrate is artificial). |
