Summary[edit]
DescriptionFumarole field - Mount Etna Volcano (8536060925).jpg |
At the summit of Mount Etna, which rises more than 3km above the coast of Sicily, huge amounts of volcanic gases are constantly pumped into the atmosphere; I captured this image during a field campaign to collect samples of volcanic carbon dioxide. It was essential to wear a gas mask at all times to work in this extreme environment, while the ground was constantly being shaken by the ongoing volcanic eruption. This captures a rare break in the cloud, which at times would engulf us completely. The object in the bottom right hand corner is a tripod, which was part of the scientific equipment being used by our research team.
