Description
English: Pictured: Nigerian soldiers paying tribute with a rifle salute to Colonel Charles Young at his funeral and burial in Lagos, Nigeria. Photo courtesy of Brian Shellum "Black Officer in a White Regiment" and the National Afro-American Museum & Cultural Center, Coleman Collection. Description: While stationed in Monrovia, Liberia in 1921, Young was sent on a reconnaissance mission to Nigeria. It was during his travels in December 1921 that he became ill from a kidney infection, succumbing to the disease on January 8, 1922. British law required Young's body to be interred in the ground in Lagos for at least one year before it could be repatriated to the US. So, on February 22, 1923 Young's body was exhumed and began its long journey home for interment at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
