Summary[edit]

Description This funerary relief from the city of Palmyra (Syria) represents a priest. Cleanly shaved, the man wears a toga, which characterized as a Roman citizen. In his left hand he holds a vase filled with fruit. Thanks to the inscription, we know his name: Jedibel, son of Oge Ya'ut. People like him were buried in elongated niches, within common funeral towers located outside the the city. The niches were sealed and decorated with this type of relief. About 300 portraits of priests from Palmyra have been preserved. limestone. 150-200 AD. From Tadmor, Palmyra in Roman times. Now in the British Museum, inv. 1889.1012.8. Picture taken at the Oog in oog met de Romeinen (Eye to Eye with the Romans) Exhibition in the Gallo-Romeins Museum of Tongres.
