English: Fungi: Ochre Cushion on Birch Polypore The bracket fungus shown here is growing on Silver Birch, and is a decaying specimen of Piptoporus betulinus, the Birch Polypore, also known as the Razorstrop Fungus; see, for example, 982828
In younger examples, the pore-bearing surface is creamy-white – https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1553987 – but here it has become brown with age. The underside of a decaying Birch Polypore often becomes host to another fungal species, Hypocrea pulvinata (Ochre Cushion), seen here as paler irregularly rounded growths; compare the following at BioImages: http://www.bioimages.org.uk/html/p7/p78475.php |
