Gamble Mansion and Fresh Water Cistern

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Gamble Mansion and Plantation in Ellenton, Florida, stands as a testament to the antebellum South. Built between 1845 and 1850 by Major Robert Gamble, this grand estate was once the center of a thriving sugar plantation. The mansion itself is a remarkable example of Greek Revival architecture, featuring towering columns and intricate woodwork. It's not just an architectural marvel; the estate also holds historical significance as the last Confederate Secretary of State, Judah P. Benjamin, took refuge here while evading capture by Union forces. Today, the mansion is a state historic site, offering visitors a glimpse into Florida's complex past through guided tours and educational exhibits.
