Summary[edit]
DescriptionGas Street Basin in Birmingham - geograph.org.uk - 1736717.jpg |
English: Gas Street Basin in Birmingham. This is in Birmingham Canal waters just north of the Worcester Bar. The narrow boats on the right are moored to the "bar" - a barrier which was originally about 2.2 metres wide preventing navigation onto the newer Worcester and Birmingham Canal. (See Gas_Street_Basin ). All cargo had to be carried across this barrier from one boat to another until an Act of Parliament in 1815 forced the Birmingham Canal Company to allow passage directly through to the other canal via a stop lock. 1736676
The bridges seen in this image led to various company wharfs, and originally continued about two hundred metres beyond the far bridge (Bridge Street) - now filled in and built upon. |
