Description
English: Joe Elder speaking at the rally at the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison prior to the Gay Pride parade down State Street on October 5, 1991. A professor in the Sociology Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1961 to 2014, Joe Elder taught a large-enrollment university course on LGBT studies. Quakers and peace activists, he and his wife Joann opposed the Vietnam War and joined PFLAG in the 1980s. He was a leader of Faculty Against Discrimination in University Programs, which in 1989 sought to suspend the university's ties to ROTC.[1] Student protests against ROTC continued at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and peaked ̠in April 1990. By 1991, protests against the ROTC's homophobia spearheaded in Madison had spread to some 60 schools nationwide (see̊ "No Hate in the Dairy State").
