Summary[edit]

Description

Geodized auloporid coral mass in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA.

Auloporids are a group of extinct tabulate corals. They consist of colonies of hard substrate-encrusting, trumpet-shaped, calcareous corallites. They first appear in the Ordovician and go extinct in the Permian. The auloporids shown above have been geodized. Geodes and geodized fossils are relatively common in the Fort Payne Formation, a fossiliferous shale-and-limestone unit in the Lower Mississippian of Kentucky and Tennessee.
