| Description |
English: Geographic tongue or benign migratory glossitis is a common tongue condition characterized by areas of loss of lingual papillae looking as red spots with white raised margins. The lesions change their shape and size over the next hours and coalesce forming thus white or red patches resembling islands in a geographic map.
Geographic tongue has an unknown cause although has been associated occasionally with diabetes, seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis. It is usually asymptomatic but a slight burning sensation with eating hot, acidic and spicy foods has been recorded in nervous patients and especially in women at menopause. Reassurance is the best treatment for the patients with geographic tongue. Το χαρακτηριστικό αυτών των βλαβών είναι η αλλαγή του σχήματος και διαστάσεων μέσα σε λίγες ώρες και η τάση τους να ενώνονται σχηματίζοντας λεύκες και ερυθρές ζώνες που μοιάζουν με νησιωτικά συμπλέγματα σε ένα γεωγραφικό χάρτη. Η αιτιολογία παραμένει άγνωστη εάν και έχει συσχετίσει στο παρελθόν με διαβήτη, σμηγματορεική δερματίτιδα ή ψωρίαση. Είναι συνήθως ασυμπτωματική αλλά ένα μικρό αίσθημα καύσους με τη λήψη καυτών, όξινων ή πικάντικων τροφών ενίοτε καταγράφεται σε αγχώδεις ασθενείς και συχνότερα σε γυναίκες κατά τη κλιμακτήριο .Δεν απαιτείται καμία θεραπεία παρά μόνο καθησυχασμός του ασθενή για την αθωότητα της βλάβης.
