Summary[edit]

Description
English: Illustration by Poul Steffensen from the Danish novel Gjøngehøvdingen by Carit Etlar which takes place during the Dano-Swedish War in 1657-1658. Svend Poulsen, Gøngehøvdingen, who pretends to be a sexton, and Captain Manheimer, a German mercenary hired by the Swedish Army in the burial chamber of Vor Frue Kirke in Vordingborg. Manheimer gets scarred when Ib Abelsøn and three other gønger appears between the coffins, making it seems like the deads are coming back to live. Svend Poulsen (app. 1610 - app. 1679) was a real person but the other characters are fictional. The look of Svend Poulsen is also fantasy as there are no portraits of him.
