Description

Gobowen North signal box located by the Up Main line alongside Chirk Road level crossing. Monday 7th September 1987

Gobowen North signal box is a McKenzie and Holland type 3 design which was opened in the early 1880s for the Great Western Railway. A replacement 16 lever Great Western Railway Stud frame was installed in 1912, and as part of the resignalling in connection with the closure of Gobowen South signal box an individual function switch controlling emergency replacement of 3R signal was commissioned on 5th June 1987. A British Railways Western Region key control instrument releasing Shell Mex & B.P. Ground Frame was commissioned on 14/03/1992 in connection with the closure of WhittingtonLow Level signal box, but was decommissioned on 28th March 1999 when control of the ground frame passed to Shrewsbury Crewe Junction signal box. The signal box was re-windowed during the summer of 1987

The signal box carries a Great Western Railway cast iron nameplate which was ordered from Reading signal works on 21st February 1898
