= The Golden Goose. 5. Simpleton, the best-natured and youngest of three brothers, was given a golden goose by a little gray man. Anyone who touched the goose out of greed remained stuck fast to it. So he went before the King, who had vowed that whoever could make his little daughter laugh would have her as his wife. Simpleton succeeded, and brought the King's daughter home as his bride. Uniform title: Grimm: Die goldene Gans ("The Golden Goose") Dimensions: 140 x 93 mm. Date: 1922 or earlier Nationality: German Publisher: Verlag: Farbenphotographische Gesellschaft m.b.H., Stuttgart, [Germany] Series: Serie 173 Nr. 3992 Medium: color print from original watercolor painting Interpretive notes: Simpleton, the good-natured youngest of three brothers, has been given a goose with golden feathers by a little old gray man as reward for his kindness. The goose has a magical power that anyone who tries to steal one of its golden feathers will instead be stuck fast. Eventually, Simpleton is trailed by three greedy sisters, a clergyman, a sexton, and two peasants. The odd procession is seen by the king and his daughter, who has not laughed in years. The king has therefore decreed that whomever can make her laugh will win her hand in marriage. Unwittingly, Simpleton succeeds. Subject headings: Simpletons; Geese; Kings; Princesses; Peasants
